With all the hoopla about the overrated Dawson’s 20 Load Weekend, I thought it was time to revisist a real gay porn classic, back in the day when sex without condoms wasn’t such a self-conscious affair.

A popular retro classic, The Other Side of Aspen comes replete with clone-moustached joggers pounding the San Francisco streets in shiny nylon shorts, guys saying “come on buddy, bring it dooooown” to their sex partners and even the occasional moment of camera underwinding. Pubes are bushy, butt cracks are furry and the sex is hippy and equitable. Tops don’t bully their bottoms, bottoms don’t bark orders at their tops, and versatility is the order of the day as a pack of sporty sex pigs fuck and fist each other inside a hokey little Aspen chalet.

Spokes is an absolutely sensational, white-hot gay porn classic. A team of five cyclists - “The Club” - pull in at an abandoned barn to initiate a new member by gang fucking him half to death. According to club tradition, the first guy to get a hard on fucks the new member first, then the rest follow. Cheeky Mark Hunter plays the insatiable inductee, and Lee Ryder springs a quick fat one and is the first cab off the rank. Little do they all know that a well-hung drifter - played by a clone who looks like he’s on his way to a Skatt Bros. audition - is hiding behind a hay bale, ready to emerge and join in the private fun.
One Sheet: The classic films of Matt Sterling
The late/great Matt Sterling’s films include Inch by Inch, The Bigger the Better, A Matter of Size and the greatest gay porn of all, Spokes (credited as Bill Clayton) - and his B-catalogue starts with Stryker Force, All American and Like A Horse.
His life story, if you can find details about it online which I never really can, sounds fascinating: he battled the spasms of motor neurone disease before dying in 2006. I’m really interested in finding out more about the guy whose love of beefy blue collar guys, athletes and muscle icons (and armpits, sweat and foot-wide thighs that are lightly dusted with caramel blond hair and tangy with desire) exactly matched mine - and the psyche-twist of his own physical limitations matched with his unmatched eye for celebrating the body-perfect male.

Dick Fisk would have turned 57 last month (d.o.b. 13 May 1955) had he not died in a car accident in 1983, while his career was in full swing. That year saw the release of Spokes, the finest gay porn film ever made, and The Other Side of Aspen, another great classic that was released just weeks before Dick’s death.
